‘Extremely dangerous’ Hurricane Dorian moves towards the US mainland, citizens being put to an alert so as to brace for impact.
Thursday evening Florida’s governor extended a state of emergency to the state prior to the arrival of Hurricane Dorian, which is forecasted to strengthen to a highly catastrophic Category 4 storm during the weekend before hitting the Atlantic coast.
Authorities canceled some commercial flights, planned precautions at rocket launch sites along the Space Coast and prepared to give out sand to residents for sandbags in advance of the storm’s arrival.
Dorian, which is spurred on by warm late-summer waters, is expected to pack winds reaching up to 130 mph (209 kph) in 72 hours, the National Hurricane Center which is based in Miami said on Thursday. Due to the circumstances, the storm would evolve into a Category 4 storm, the second-strongest on the Saffir-Simpson scale for measuring hurricane intensity.
It would be capable of causing “catastrophic damage” including severe damage to well-built homes. It is said that in such storms, “Most trees will be snapped or uprooted and power poles downed.”It is expected that Dorian would make landfall on Florida’s eastern coast on Monday before lingering over central Florida on Tuesday but tropical-storm-force winds from the storm could begin in parts of Florida as early as Saturday evening as predicted by the hurricane center. IT would possibly affect big population areas, as well as many major Florida tourist destinations.
