Devastating damage cause with fears of widespread as Dorian becomes strongest ever hurricane in the northwestern Bahamas.The category 5 hurricane which is capable of inflicting catastrophic levels of destruction, has made landfall on an island in the northern Bahamas causing heavy destruction according to reports.
Torrential rain, winds of 285 kilometers an hour and massive waves were reported as the storm hit Elbow Cay in the Abaco Islands on Sunday, US National Hurricane Center(NHC) in Miami said.
According to National Weather Service, this hurricane is the strongest recorded in the northwestern Bahamas till date in modern history.
Flooding, destruction of rocks and buildings, power outages and other problems were reported by residents as authorities reported the eyewall of the storm could pass directly over the islands. It is also expected to pass over the Grand Bahama Island, the northernmost island in the country later in the day, as it continued to move west at a steady and sluggish 11 km/h.
Residents have been requested to evacuate both the areas by officials, making several last-minute pleas as the storm made landfall.”We cannot stress the amount of devastation and catastrophic impact that Hurricane Dorian is expected to bring,” Shavonne Moxey-Bonamy, the Bahamas chief meteorologist, said on Sunday. Sea levels might rise up to six meters and winds might reach a speed of 340 km/h due to the storm according to the NHC.
