HYDERABAD: The Chairperson of Global Cyber Security Forum, Sai Krishna revealed that only 5-10% of pharma companies in India have foolproof cybersecurity. The forum is co-hosting a two-day Global Cyber Security conference in Hyderabad, in collaboration with Kenes exhibitions, Israel and in support with Telangana government and Consulate General of Israel.
Pharma companies with zero or no cybersecurity will have major repercussions in case of cyber-attack, especially small and medium-sized units, Sai Krishna had said. He talked about hosting an expert panel on data privacy and security by keeping the Hyderabad pharma hub in mind. Here, they would discuss Pharma 4.0, which is the way forward for over 600 plus pharma companies in Hyderabad. Currently, any policy to audit its data and cybersecurity system is non-existent.
The pharma industry requires digital security practices in recent times. Lack of proper data security and outdated software being used in companies are giving the hackers ample opportunities to steal data and sensitive information from the R&D database. A company involved in the research and creation of a particular medicine composition for years may have their data or formula stolen by the hackers who would eventually sell it in the black market. It possesses a humungous risk to pharma companies.
Sai Krishna also emphasized the dangers of the server of the manufacturing plant being hacked. Since most companies are still running traditional machinery, so the machinery responsible for manufacturing the drug is connected to computing systems. The hacking of the manufacturing plant server won’t just affect the whole plant but will also cause a malfunction in the critical functioning of the plant. The critical drug composition may be changed by the hacker which will be an alarming threat to the safety of the consumers. The current systems in India lack security control and visibility in place to immediately detect the attack and respond on a real-time basis.
Most companies discover the hack or data breach only after 6-8 months of the attack, as stated by the expert.
