Mumbai: Pediatrician Dr. Pallavi Saple is appointed as the new dean of the state-run JJ Hospital, Byculla. Dr. Ajay Chandanwale was in charge of the post since December last year but now he is replaced by Dr. Saple.
Prior to this, Dr. Saple was the dean of Government Medical College (GMC) in Miraj.
There have been two deans in JJ Hospital in less than 2 years. The Secretary of Medical Education, Sanjay Mukherjee said that the transfers are because of administrative reasons and there is a shuffle of several deans.
Transfer orders were issued on Wednesday by the medical education department for the deans of five government medical colleges, including Pune’s BJ Medical, JJ Hospital, GMC, Miraj, Gondia and Kolhapur.
Sources revealed that Dr. Chandanwale will be returning to his previous institute, BJ Medical College, while the current dean of the Pune Institute, Dr. SD Nanandkar will take over as GMC, Miraj’s dean.
Before he was shunted to Kolhapur in 2017, Dr. Nanandkar was the dean of JJ. Also, in this year’s March, he was subsequently given charge of BJ Medical College.
Dr. Chandanwale confirmed while speaking to TOI that he has indeed got his transfer orders and said that he was happy with his nine-month stint in Mumbai during which he tried to improve the systems and worked towards bringing in transparency and discipline with the support of his doctors, nurses and hospital staffers.
In 50 wards of the hospital, ECG machines have been installed and the credit is given to Dr. Chandanwale who raised over Rs 4 crore from various corporate houses that funded this initiative. Even on Tuesday, the institute received a donation of Rs 1.61 crore from the Tata group. He said that this fund will be utilized to develop an efficient token system for outpatients.
However, Dr. Chandanwale’s stint was also a part of controversy last March when students went on a strike after the diktat issued by the college which said that girls shouldn’t wear short skirts and should be seated separately from their male counterparts during college events.
