Bilaspur: As a majority of the senior citizens mostly find it tough to cope with even the daily activities or the basic necessities of living, old age may become synonymous with dependability, diseases, loneliness, frailty, etc. Cases of abandonment and neglect by children are increasing every day which is scary because most of the senior citizens are dependent on their children for almost everything.
An initiative to establish a palliative care center has been launched in Chhattisgarh’s Bilaspur to help the senior citizens in the city.
This care center has been started by Sankalpit Seva Sanathan with the help of Chhattisgarh government’s Social Welfare Department.
Sandeep Tiwari, the center’s director talked about how their center helps the old patients afflicted with incurable diseases, or are terminally ill and require nursing care and how their main initiative is to help all the old patients who didn’t get proper care from their families. They want to make sure that the last days of these patients are filled with care and love and that their suffering is lessened.
He also claimed that in Central India, this center is the first of its kind and it will serve and benefit the people in the whole region and ease as much of their pain as possible.
Sanjay Alang, the District Collector of Bilaspur has also made his contribution to this initiative of opening palliative care center for the old and infirm which is highly appreciated by the people. Through this care center, Alang says that they want to convey the message to their community that old people are the responsibility of not just their own children, but of the society as well.
The palliative care will get visits on a regular basis from religious preachers along with being equipped with nursing staff, doctors, yoga instructors, physiotherapist, and social activists. At present, the center house 10 patients.
Permission from the family members is taken before admitting the patients to the center where the services are provided free of cost. But, one decision has been taken by the center that in case of death of a patient, they will perform the last rites themselves in case nobody comes to take the body within 24 hours.
